A Heartwarming Gathering: Mount Stewart School's Macmillan Coffee Morning and Parents Afternoon Tea

The results can be extraordinary when a community comes together to support a meaningful cause. This was evident at Mount Stewart School's recent Macmillan Coffee Morning and Parents Afternoon Tea event, where children and staff donned green attire and baked mouth-watering treats and raised an impressive £1,100 for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. This event was about fundraising and a touching tribute to Rhea, a Year 1 student who courageously battled cancer before passing away last April.

A Sea of Green Support:

On the Friday 29^th of September, the school was a vibrant sea of green, as students and staff showed unwavering support for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. The sea of green attire was not just a visual display but a symbol of unity and solidarity with those affected by cancer. It highlighted our commitment to making a difference in the lives of individuals and families who need it most.

Baking and Generosity:

What's a coffee morning and afternoon tea without delectable treats? The Mount Stewart School community did not disappoint. Many dedicated staff and students rolled their sleeves and showcased their baking talents by creating cakes and sweet delights. These homemade creations were not only delicious but also a testament to the generosity of our school community. The spirit of giving was truly heart-warming.

Raising £1,100 for a Worthy Cause:

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the fundraising success. Through the collective efforts of our students, staff, and parents, we raised a total of £1,100 for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. This remarkable sum will be vital in supporting cancer survivors, offering comfort and care during their challenging journeys.

In Memory of Rhea:

The event held a special place in our hearts as we remembered Rhea, a beloved Year 1 student who battled cancer with immense courage. Rhea's passing last April was a heartbreaking moment for our community. This event was about raising funds and a heartfelt tribute to her memory. She would have been proud to see how her school supported such a worthy cause.

Mount Stewart School's Macmillan Coffee Morning and Parents Afternoon Tea was not just a fundraising event but a testament to the power of community and compassion. It reminded us that we can make a real difference in the lives of those in need.

We immensely appreciate our students, staff, and parents' dedication and generosity. We look forward to continuing to organise events that bring our community closer and create positive change.

We are encouraging students to walk, wheel or cycle into school, to enhance the safety and well-being of everyone as we begin to reopen.

 

To encourage as many as possible to actively travel to school and to support social distancing measures, Brent Council, with TfL, are introducing a temporary ‘School Street’ on Mount Stewart Avenue for Mount Stewart Infant & Junior Schools on 7^th September 2020.

 

Reducing the number of cars around the school will help make the area safer and less congested and ensure the area is safe for our students, families and staff.

 

What is happening?

Temporary restrictions will be introduced on the road during pick-up and drop-off times, prohibiting vehicles (cars, vans etc.) on the road.

 

Mount Stewart Ave  will be closed to motor traffic between the hours of 8:15am-9:15am and 2:30pm-4:00pm from 7^th September 2020, becoming a pedestrian and cycle zone during these hours during term time.  This will be for an initial six month period after which comments will be reviewed and then a decision will be made whether to make the scheme permanent.

 

Residents, blue badge holders and emergency vehicles will still be allowed access to the road during the outlined times. Signage will be installed to notify drivers of the changes and barriers will be used on Mount Stewart Avenue during the hours mentioned above.

Why is this happening?

In the short term, creating a School Street will:

• Reduce congestion and pollution near the school.
• Make it easier to implement social distancing measures as more people choose to walk, wheel or cycle to school.
• Help increase confidence amongst the school community that it is safe to travel and return to school.

 

The result of this is a safer and healthier environment for everyone.

 

How can I have my say?

As there is still uncertainty with how schools will adapt to the full impact of pupils returning there may be some adjustments to the scheme in the future. What can I do to support this?

As we welcome children back to school, please consider walking, wheeling or cycling to drop offs and pick ups where possible.

We are extra mindful of safety and having fewer cars around the school will help us cut congestion. Plus, it’s fun and healthy.

Be the Change

 

Through education, humility and open mindedness we will strive to raise the levels of understanding and knowledge of the inequalities in our society to better challenge and fight against them. It is vital that we work together as a community to support each other, and to say:

Black Lives Matter.

 

Recently we have experienced some of the largest protests for decades following the death of George Floyd.  We have no doubt that these events have affected many families and I know many within our community are keen to use their voices to show their support for the Black Lives Matter campaign.  We recognise that racism is experienced by people we care about; our families, networks and wider circles.  We will continue to use our voices to highlight injustices.  We will continue to be active as a school community, having a shared and long-lasting responsibility to be the change we wish to see.

 

Our Federation is entirely committed to fighting racism and prejudice in all and any of its forms, and to the active promotion of equality for all through education. We recognise the heightened distress caused directly to so many of our colleagues, pupils, families and community in the current situation. We are with you. We are determined to work together to make positive change and to create a just society for all. Without justice there will be no peace.

As the pandemic took charge, schools throughout the nation were closed on Friday 20 March only allowing vulnerable children and children of key workers to remain in school.

 

During the lockdown, schools and children alike have been faced with huge challenges. Whilst some kids may have been prepared with 1 or 2 exercise books and homework packs, others introduced entirely new home learning systems like this school. The team behind the Mount Stewart schools have worked so hard to keep their children learning in the class as well as from home online by setting structured systems, the use of Google Classrooms, Zoom calls, videos and lots of other resources to facilitate learning at home throughout this difficult time.

 

This week, Primary schools across England gradually open up for Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 children. Without a doubt, the Mount Stewart Schools will have implemented enviable methods and structures to ensure everyone’s safety, well-being and the best learning experience.
